Toyota’s Corolla Cross suggests that maybe there is a type of car buyer who is immune to SUV mania. Sharing much of its mechanical package with the sedan and hatchback from which it derives its name, the subcompact SUV is outsold by the regular Corolla nearly 3 to 1. Or maybe it’s just that the Corolla Cross’ nearly $2,000 premium over the Corolla is more daunting to buyers on a strict budget. Regardless, the Corolla Cross remains one of the most affordable new vehicles on the market, and Toyota is leaving it alone for the 2025 model year. New paint options and standard black exterior trim are the only changes. Accordingly, the cost increases just $175 from 2024 to a starting price of $25,385 (all prices include $1,350 destination fee).
Powertrain Specs and MPG
The Corolla Cross is available with a regular gas engine or a hybrid powertrain. The gas engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 169 horsepower and 150 pounds-feet of torque; it’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive available for $1,300 on every trim level. With FWD, the Corolla Cross for 2024 returned an EPA-rated 31/33/32 mpg city/highway/combined, and AWD versions got 29/31/30 mpg; neither is expected to change for 2025.
Every Corolla Cross Hybrid is AWD, as two electric motors help drive the front wheels and a third powers the rear when needed. Also employing a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the hybrid generates 196 hp combined and was rated at 45/38/32 mpg for 2024.
