New/Notable:
- Smallest Prius version
- Available Safety Sense C system with driver aids
- Special Edition trim offered for 2016
The 2016 Toyota Prius c hatchback is the smallest hybrid of Toyota’s Prius lineup. Its overall size and fuel efficiency make the subcompact very convenient for city-driving. The Prius c earned the Cars.com award for Most Eco Friendly Car of the Year for 2016.
Five trim levels are available: One, Two, Special Edition, Three, and Four.
Overall, the 5-door Prius c maintains a traditional hatchback appearance. However, it does have an aggressive front-end with angry headlights, a wide mouth grille, and tuner-esque faux air vents. Synchronized turn signals are found on the side mirrors and above the front-end air vents. The Special Edition trim comes in black with Electric Lime or Cherry Pearl exterior and interior and black-painted 15-inch wheels. A moonroof, heated side mirrors, and 16-inch wheels are also available.
All of the Prius c trims come with a 73-hp, 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The front wheels are driven by a continuously variable automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the Prius c is an EPA-estimated 53/46 mpg city/highway.
Inside, the Prius c features unique molded plastic textures along the dashboard and door panels, as well as soft cloth seating. Standard features include air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and remote keyless entry. Heated front seats, cruise control, a split-folding rear seat, and a navigation system are also available.
The Prius c earned 4 out of 5-star safety ratings in side-crash and rollover tests from the NHTSA. It comes standard with front air bags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. Toyota’s Safety Sense C system is available as well. It has lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a pre-collision system.
