The 2015 smart fortwo electric drive combines the city-friendly dimensions of the fortwo with gas-free, electric motoring.

As a city focused car, the fortwo is not really a highway cruiser or a long distance traveler. In most applications it’s found in cities and used for short jaunts to work or around town – tasks for which range anxiety is much less of an issue and an electric car would fit perfectly. The fortwo electric drive’s 76 miles of range is plenty for these situations, and the chance to go gas-free and save some money at the pump should be appealing for many drivers.

There isn’t much to distinguish the fortwo electric drive from the regular, gasoline version besides the lack of tailpipe. The fortwo electric does have one extra trick up its sleeve though: it’s the only cabriolet electric car available today.

The fortwo electric drive has a water-cooled three-phase AC motor, powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. Total output from the motor is 74-hp and 96 pounds-feet of torque. The fortwo electric can be fully charged in six hours on a 240V plug (requires the installation of a charging station) and 14 hours on a regular 120V household socket.

Inside, the fortwo electric offers more standard features than the fortwo, with standard automatic temperature control, power windows, and a leather trimmed steering wheel. Heated seats, a navigation system, and a surround sound stereo are optional. The fortwo electric also offers plenty of technology that connects the car to you, including a vehicle home page app that connects the car to your smart phone and allows you to see the battery level, preset the A/C, and see your range.

Smart is an active subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, so they also get the Mercedes’ focus on safety. A very strong, roll-cage-like frame is the basis for this. Side curtain, knee, and front airbags are standard, as are antilock brakes and electronic stability control. LED daytime running lamps are optional.
