Entering its fourth model year, the Infiniti QX55 is unchanged for 2025, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring — the QX55 is a marvel. From the front, it looks like a scowling space carp, but Infiniti’s talented designers managed to make it an undeniably attractive and cohesive scowling space carp. Adhering to the SUV-coupe playbook penned by the original BMW X6, it’s a less practical and more expensive mechanical twin to the QX50. What it shares with the QX50, as well as a handful of other Infinitis and Nissans, is what makes it marvelous.
Powertrain Specs and MPG
The QX55 is only available with a single powertrain: a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is standard. But that engine is unlike any other engine in the world; Infiniti’s parent company, Nissan, calls it the VC-Turbo. VC stands for variable compression, which means this 2.0-liter can do what no other engine can: It effectively adjusts the travel length of the pistons in milliseconds. For something made of heavy metal pieces spinning at thousands of rpm, that’s astounding. Companies around the world have been striving to build such a thing for decades, but only Nissan and Infiniti have realized it.
Marvelous as the engine is, though, the results are underwhelming. The point of varying the compression ratio is to create more power without sacrificing efficiency — or to realize greater efficiency without sacrificing power, if you prefer — but the VC-Turbo doesn’t distinguish itself in output or fuel economy. The engine’s 268 horsepower and 280 pounds-feet of torque are on par with competitors’ not-at-all-groundbreaking 2.0-liter turbo fours. Likewise, its manufacturer-rated 22/28/25 mpg city/highway/combined is mid-pack.
