2016 Ford Fusion Energi Overview

  • Plug-in hybrid version of the Fusion midsize sedan
  • 21 miles of electric-only range
  • Available in SE or Titanium trim levels
The 2016 Ford Fusion Energi is the more robust version of the Fusion Hybrid, with a larger battery that gives is 21 miles of electric range, before flipping into hybrid mode.

Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds to new cars buyers: electric, gas-free capability, with freedom from range anxiety. On a full charge, the Fusion Energi offers 21 miles of electric-only range and at speeds of up to 82 mph, meaning you can take it on the freeway, unlike the Toyota Prius Plug-in which tops out around 60 mph. Ford also says that the average daily commute in the US is around 20 miles, which means that your commute (or much of it) could become emissions free.

The Fusion Energi’s powertrain is identical to the one found in the Hybrid; a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine running on the Atkinson cycle combines with an electric motor to produce 188 total horsepower. The 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack in the Energi is much larger than the 1.4 kWh battery found in the Hybrid and sits in the rear of the Fusion.

Charging happens through a small port on the front, driver’s side of the Fusion Energi via a standard household 120-volt plug or an available 240-volt charging station that requires separate installation. Charge time is seven hours with the 120-volt plug, or 2.5 hours with the 240-volt charging station. When the electric power does run out, the Fusion Energi operates more like a normal hybrid with regenerative braking returning power to the batteries. When running on gas, the Fusion Energi’s fuel economy checks in at 44/41 mpg city/highway.

The Fusion Energi packs in more standard features than the regular Fusion with dual-zone automatic climate control, specialized gauges, SYNC with MyFord Touch, leather upholstery, heated/powered front seats, and Bluetooth connectivity all coming standard. Also standard is the MyFord Mobile app, which allows owner to monitor charging and locate charging stations to plan trips. A power moonroof, push-button start, and a navigation system are optional.

The Fusion Energi is also offered with some of the most advanced safety options around, including an Active Park Assist system which can automatically steer the car into a parallel parking spot while the driver only has to control the gas and brake, and an adaptive cruise control system which will automatically maintain following distance with the car ahead of you.
