2015 Ford Fusion Energi Overview

New/Notable:

  • Plug-in hybrid version of the Fusion midsize sedan
  • Minor changes for 2015
  • 21 miles of electric-only range
The 2015 Ford Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid that offers both full-electric and hybrid motoring in an environmentally friendly package that will save you even more money at the pump.

Plug-in hybrids are the sparkly unicorn of the eco-minded: electric, gas-free capability, with freedom from range anxiety. On a full charge, the Fusion Energi offers 21 miles of electric-only range and at speeds of up to 82 mph, meaning you can take it on the freeway unlike the Prius Plug-in. Ford also says that the average daily commute in the US is around 20 miles, which potentially means that your commute could become emissions free.

The Fusion Energi’s powertrain combines a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine running on the Atkinson cycle with an electric motor that is powered by a 7.6kW lithium-ion battery pack. In total, the Fusion Energi has 195-hp on tap.

Charging happens through a small port on the front, driver’s side of the Fusion Energi via a standard 120-volt plug or an available 240-volt charging station that requires separate installation. Charge time is seven hours with the 120-volt plug, or three hours with the 240-volt charging station. When the electric power does run out, the Fusion Energi operates more like a normal hybrid with regenerative braking returning power to the batteries. When running on gas, the Fusion Energi’s fuel economy checks in at 44/41 mpg city/highway.

Changes for 2015 include new 17-inch alloy wheels, four new exterior colors, and a new power passenger seat in SE models that has six-way movement. The Fusion Energi packs in more standard features than the regular Fusion with dual-zone automatic climate control, specialized gauges, SYNC with MyFord Touch, leather upholstery, heated/powered front seats, and Bluetooth connectivity all coming standard. Also standard is the MyFord Mobile app, which allows owner to monitor charging and locate charging stations to plan trips. A power moonroof, push-button start, and a navigation system are optional.

The Fusion Energi is also offered with some of the most advanced safety options around, including an Active Park Assist system which can automatically steer the car into a parallel parking spot while the driver only has to control the gas and brake, and an adaptive cruise control system which will automatically maintain following distance with the car ahead of you.
