The 2016 Ford Expedition is the flagship SUV in the lineup with a maximum towing capacity of 9,200 pounds. It competes with the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Toyota Sequoia.
Four trims are available: the XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum.
As a full-size road vehicle, the Expedition has a utilitarian, rugged appearance. The King Ranch trim comes with a “Caribou” colored accent trim for its bumpers, underbody, and fenders. Standard features include power/heated side mirrors, LED fog lights, and 18-inch wheels. Chrome exhaust and door handles, halogen projector headlights, a moonroof, a power liftgate, power running boards, and larger 20- or 22-inch wheels are also available.
The Expedition is powered by a 365-hp, turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and rear- or 4-wheel drive. Fuel economy for the Expedition is an EPA-estimated 16/22 mpg city/highway.
Inside, the Expedition can accommodate up to 8 passengers across three rows. For 2016, the SYNC 3 Communications and Entertainment System is available. It includes a touchscreen, apps, satellite radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and voice control. In the King Ranch and Platinum trims, the front seats are leather-trimmed, heated, and power-adjustable. Leather upholstery, keyless entry, push-button start, a power folding third-row seat, and a Sony premium audio system are also available. Standard features include air conditioning, cruise control, a tilting/telescoping steering wheel, and power adjustable front seats.
The Expedition earned a full 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the NHTSA. A limited-slip rear differential is available to help with acceleration during slippery road conditions. The optional continuously controlled dampening (CCD) suspension has three selectable drive modes – comfort, normal, and sport. A front parking sensor, a blind spot warning system, and rear cross-traffic alert are available as well. Standard features include front and side-curtain airbags, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, a post-crash alert system, hill start/descent assist, a rear parking sensor, and a backup camera.
