2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV Overview

Today, Chevrolet announced a new feature of its 2025 Silverado EV RST. Like the GMC Hummer EV, Chevy’s electric pickup truck will be able to crab-walk at low speeds to enhance maneuverability. On the Hummer, the feature is actually called CrabWalk, but Chevrolet is calling it Sidewinder mode.

The feature works the same way here as it does on the Hummer EV and requires the RST’s standard rear-wheel steering. Normally, at low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the fronts, shrinking the vehicle’s turning circle and allowing for tighter cornering. With Sidewinder engaged, the rear wheels steer in the same direction as the front wheels at speeds up to 20 mph, allowing the vehicle to drive diagonally — the way a crab walks or a sidewinder snake moves. This could be useful for avoiding obstacles off-road or for easing your mammoth electric pickup into a parallel parking space. It would also be disastrous if you weren’t anticipating it, which is why Sidewinder mode must be engaged through the infotainment touchscreen.

Not only will Sidewinder mode be standard on the 2025 Silverado EV RST, but Chevrolet will be pushing it to existing model-year 2024 trucks through an over-the-air update. So, if your electric pickup has been sitting in the woods with its nose against a tree, head out there, download Sidewinder and see if you can get ‘er free.
