How the 2010 MINI Cooper stacks up against the competition - by Nigel Cooper, Topanga, CA

MINI Cooper Review
2010 MINI Cooper
Price Range: $18,550 - $24,250

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. The Cooper is considerably cheaper to get to the dealership than the average convertible. The average convertible guzzles a lot of gas compared to the MINI Cooper. When it comes to gas mileage, the MINI Cooper beats the average convertible. In terms of MSRP, the MINI Cooper costs tremendously less than the average convertible. The average convertible will cost you a lots_of_money in gasoline every year compared to the MINI Cooper.

Utility
The MINI Cooper will quite certainly prove handier than the average convertible for those of you with frequent child-cargo. There's no clear winner between the MINI Cooper and the typical convertible with respect to hauling capacity.

Convenience
You will quite certainly have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the average convertible than with the MINI Cooper.

Comfort
While the front cabin in the MINI Cooper offers a bit more head room than the average convertible, there frankly isn't much of a difference. The MINI Cooper is not particularly more spacious for your passengers than the average convertible.

Dimensions
The average convertible is tremendously more bulky than the MINI Cooper. Your wallet will hurt more every time you fill up the average convertible than the MINI Cooper because of its bigger tank. The Cooper fits in smaller parking spaces than the average convertible.

Performance
With respect to horsepower, the average convertible packs quite a punch and will knock the Cooper down a few rungs. On the other hand, remember that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their similar turning circles, the MINI Cooper and the typical convertible likely handle almost the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The MINI Cooper's engine is tremendously smaller than the average convertible's. Note that a smaller engine usually has to work a little harder; on the other hand, smaller engines typically get better gas mileage. Torque equals pickup, and the average convertible will have picked up and gone by the time the MINI Cooper finally gets moving. The Cooper could learn a lesson or two from the average convertible when it comes to torque.

Warranty
The basic after-sale protection that comes with the average convertible isn't quite as generous as the MINI Cooper's.
