A venerable go-kart for the street, the 2008 Mini Cooper continues to win the hearts of sport compact enthusiasts with its unique retro design, razor-sharp handling, and hatchback flexibility. Even with its significant refresh last year, it still features the cuteness and curve-carving personality that makes people smile.
The Cooper is available as a hardtop three-door compact hatchback or a gorgeous convertible with a power cloth top. Either version is motivated by a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 118 horsepower and an ample amount of torque, mated to a quick-shifting Getrag® 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual shifting ability. Fuel economy with the manual transmission is an impressive 28/37 city/highway MPG. Standard front-wheel drive offers excellent handling on the track or the street.
Safety features include 4-wheel, 4-sensor anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake force distribution and Cornering Brake Control which help the mini stop with authority and help to minimize wheel lockup by stabilizing brake pressure. Six standard airbags (on hardtop models) including dual front, dual seat-mounted side, and side curtain airbags to protect front and rear passengers. Optional Dynamic Stability Control helps to enhance vehicle control and driver confidence during evasive maneuvers. Standard All-Season Traction control prevents wheel spin and increases grip on slippery or icy roads. The standard Flat Tire Monitor alerts the driver if any change in tire pressure is detected. Optional Park Distance Control uses ultrasonic waves emitted from sensors in the rear bumper to help you back up without hitting any objects. Optional run-flat tire allow you to drive up to 80 MPH with a loss of pressure. Optional Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlamps with auto-leveling and power washer keep visibility at a maximum.
Outside, the Cooper is fully customizable with contrasting roof and mirror colors and various hood stripes to give it the authentic rally-inspired look. Inside, the optional Navigation System uses GPS satellite technology to provide real-time traffic information, turn-by-turn directions, and features voice-control functions. An available dual-pane panoramic sunroof offers an invitation to the sun and ocean breezes, if you’re so lucky. The optional Mini HiFi CD Sound System features 10 speakers, MP3 capability, and an optional high-definition radio for the ultimate sound.
There are few cars that rival the 2008 Mini Cooper in terms of its fun-to-drive quotient, cuteness, and overall grin-inducing driving experience.
