The 2009 Dodge Journey is the brand’s first mid-size crossover SUV and will have you saying “C’mon kids, get in the cool car.” Fashioned on the same platform as the Dodge Avenger sedan, the Journey’s stylingis crisp and somewhat Caliber-like, with Dodge's trademark "crosshair" grille, prominent wheel arches, a rising window line, and a rakishly angled liftgate window. With flexible seating for seven, a choice of four- or six-cylinder engines and lots of innovative interior storage space, the Journey runs neck-and-neck with destination vehicles like the Ford Edge, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano and Toyota Highlander.

You’re safe for the entire journey. Each new Dodge comes equipped with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, a stability/traction-control system, front side airbags, three-row curtain side airbags and electronic rollover deployment. Options include a back-up camera and all-wheel drive. The Journey boasts available 19-inch wheels, setting it apart from the rest of the mid-size crossover pack.

Dodge Journey’s rear doors open 90 degrees, which makes it easy for the mature adult to get in and out of the vehicle (along with swift access to the available third seat). Second and third rows feature staggered theater seating.  Pint-size passengers will love riding in the back – the car’s angles allow windows with wide views. Sloped rear glass in the liftgate’s lower edge improves driver visibility.

Onlookers will notice a sexy, sporty package: a lean, stretched horizontal line, aerodynamic spoiler on that liftgate, the gleam of chrome-tipped dual exhausts, and jeweled red tail lamps that curve from here to infinity.

Even interiors are wearing higher-quality materials than Chrysler's usual. Seat upholstery comes in three types: cloth, YES essentials (stain/odor resistant, anti-static), and leather.

Spacious storage bins are hidden in the floor and tucked under the front passenger seat cushion. The 10.75” X 8.75” Flip 'N Stow is large enough to store a purse, umbrella, planner or headphones. Fit up to two iced-down six packs in the second row floorboard.

As well, Dodge Journey is the first vehicle in the crossover segment to offer integrated child booster seats.

Neat cool options include digital-age family musts like a navigation system, rear DVD entertainment, satellite radio, wireless cell-phone link, and Chrysler's "MyGig" onboard hard-drive for storing and playback of MP3 music files. Expected later is optional satellite TV, as offered on the redesigned 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans.

The 2009 Dodge Journey offers three style levels and as many familiar corporate powertrains. The base SE comes with a 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, the midline SXT a 186-horsepower 2.7-liter "flex-fuel" V6 that can run on E85 ethanol. Both these trims mandate a four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The top-line R/T carries a 235-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and a six-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive as a separate, exclusive option; these combos are available for SXT.

With a bold, sporty design, child friendliness, loads of storage, cargo and seating flexibility, and a 'fun to drive in all kinds of weather' attitude, the 2009 Dodge Journey has it way over the minivan. And that’s way cool.
