2014 BMW 428 Overview

New/Notable:
  • New model for 2014
  • Replaces the two-door versions of the 3-series
  • 241-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
BMW debuts the 4-series for 2014, which replaces the coupe/convertible versions of the 3-series. The first new model in this series is the 428, which offers seating for four passengers and shares its powertrain with the 328.

Styling on the 428 is sleeker than that found on the 3-series; its front end is bolder, with more contours and curves which catch the eye and give it more character. The greenhouse slopes sharply as you move rearward, giving the 4-series a lean look with a long hood that gives it classic proportions. 17-inch alloy wheels are standard, along with xenon adaptive headlights with LED accents. At first, only coupe versions of the 428 will be sold, with convertible versions to follow in early 2014.

Under the hood, the 428 shares its powertrain with the 328: a 241-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 258 pounds-feet of torque. This engine was one of our favorites in the 328 and we have no reason to think it won’t be in this application as well. An eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters is standard, with a six-speed manual optional for those who prefer to row their own gears. An all-wheel drive version of the 428 is available, called the 428i xDrive.

Fuel economy figures check in at 23/35 mpg city/highway for rear-wheel drive models. Opting for all-wheel drive drops those figures slightly to 22/33 mpg.

Inside, the new 428 features the same luxury and comfort expected from a BMW. Standard features include HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, powered front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push button start, a power moonroof, and iDrive with a 6.5-inch center touch screen. A technology package is also available which adds enhanced USB/Bluetooth integration, real-time traffic information with navigation, and a head-up display.

The 2014 428 gets the requisite standard safety features, including antilock brakes, knee airbags for both the driver and front passenger, electronic stability system, and BMW Assis eCall which includes an SOS button and automatic collision notifications (10-year subscription included). A surround view monitor, which displays a real-time picture of what’s happening around the 428, is optional.
