2024 Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric Overview

The all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge are getting new powertrains and increased range for the 2024 model year. The Swedish luxury carmaker also confirmed that the electric vehicles will be available with rear-wheel drive — the first time Volvo has offered a RWD product in 25 years.

For RWD versions, a new 248-horsepower electric motor is mounted on the rear axle. The battery pack has also been updated to be more energy-dense and grows from 78 kilowatt-hours to 82 kWh. The company claims the RWD models will get an EPA-rated 297 miles of range for the C40 Recharge, while the XC40 Recharge will have a slightly lower 293-mile rating (official EPA numbers are not yet available, however). The new battery takes 28 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge with a DC fast charger at up to 200 kilowatts versus the all-wheel-drive models’ 37 minutes.

The dual-motor AWD models also receive some updates, with Volvo replacing the 150-kW motors with a 255-hp motor at the rear and a new 147-hp motor on the front axle. Volvo says that the front motor is only activated when it is needed. Range has improved, as well: The dual-motor C40 Recharge achieves 257 miles of range (up from 226 miles), and the XC40 Recharge now gets 254 miles (up from 223), according to the brand. The AWD models retain the smaller 78-kWh battery pack and its slower 150-kW charging speed, however.

Both models get minor exterior updates for 2024, with new paint colors and a new 19-inch wheel option that helps reduce drag, says Volvo.

Volvo has not yet released any pricing information for the 2024 C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge lineup, but look for those details to be available prior to the EVs’ arrival at dealerships later this year.
