Don't Overpay for Your New Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Overview

It is easy to overlook just what a tremendous accomplishment the Toyota RAV4 is. In the pickup-crazy U.S., year after year, the top sellers are full-size trucks and the RAV4. However, there’s usually a significant gap — around 100,000 annual sales — between the RAV4 and the fifth-place vehicle. It may look especially untrue in that context, but this thing is a giant in sales.

For 2024, Toyota focused its attention on the Woodland Edition. New to the lineup last year, the Woodland Edition now gets a standard 1.25-inch bumper mount for accessories like a cargo carrier or bike rack, as well as new two-tone paint options and available heated seats, a heated steering wheel and rain-sensing windshield wipers with a de-icer function.

Specs and MPG: Efficient Powertrains
The RAV4 is again available with a choice of three powertrains. The plain old gas engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 203 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Buyers also have the option to get a detuned version of that engine with two different hybrid setups: The 219-hp regular hybrid and the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid, which comes equipped with more powerful electric motors fed by a larger battery pack (2024 information for the PHEV is not yet available). Both hybrids use continuously variable automatics. The gas engine is available with front- or all-wheel drive, while the hybrids are exclusively AWD, driving their rear axles with a dedicated electric motor.

Fuel economy varies depending on trim level due to factors like wheel size and weight. While official EPA ratings for all RAV4s aren’t yet available for the 2024 model, the 2023 non-hybrid RAV4 ranges from a high of 27/35/30 mpg city/highway/combined for a base front-drive LE trim to a low of 25/32/28 mpg for the AWD TRD Off-Road variant. The RAV4 Hybrid gets an estimated 41/38/40 mpg in all trims but the Woodland Edition, which is rated at 38/35/37 mpg. The plug-in Prime has an electric-only range of 42 miles and estimated fuel economy rating of 40/36/38 mpg. Toyota hasn’t released details or pricing on the 2024 RAV4 Prime yet, but we don’t expect any significant changes.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5
All RAV4s include Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 as standard equipment. This tech suite includes adaptive cruise control, lane-centering steering, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. Additional features, such as a 360-degree parking camera and a digital rearview mirror that gives the driver a clear view out the back even with cargo stacked to the roof, are available on certain trim levels.
