2016 Toyota Highlander Overview (See Available Styles)

  • New Towing Package standard on all V-6 models
  • Seats up to eight people across three rows
  • All-wheel drive is available
The 2016 Toyota Highlander is a family-friendly crossover SUV that offers a DVD entertainment system to keep the kids occupied, as well as all-wheel drive for trips off the beaten path. For 2016, the towing package is now standard for all V-6 models.

The Towing Package comes with a heavy-duty radiator, 200-watt fan coupling, supplemental transmission oil cooler and a 150-amp alternator. The addition of this package allows V-6 models to tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The Highlander is styled to look like a worthy off-road vehicle, featuring aggressive, angular headlights and black cladding on the underside of the body. For the XLE trim and up, the Highlander has a standard flip-up rear window and adjustable power liftgate – making it much more convenient for loading and unloading packages or other cargo. 18 and 19-inch wheel sizes are available. Exterior options include roof rails, power moonroof, and LED daytime running lights.

The two engine options available are a 185-hp, 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine for the LE trim, and a 270-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine for the LE Plus, XLE, and Limited trims. The 4-cylinder gets 20/25 mpg city/highway, while the V-6 gets 19/25 mpg. All trims have a standard 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode and snow mode.

The Highlander offers seating for up to 8 passengers across 3 rows. Driver Easy Speak is a welcomed option that allows parents to easily communicate with their children in the backseats. It uses a built-in microphone connected to the speaker system to project voices from the front seat to the whole car. The standard Entune Infotainment System can be upgraded with additional functions including HD radio, Yelp reviews, and navigation. Other standard features include cruise control, air conditioning, USB port, and Bluetooth. A panoramic moonroof, rear seat entertainment system, heated and ventilated front seats, and second-row sunshades are optional.

The 2016 Highlander earned a full 5-star overall crash test rating from NTHSA. Standard safety features include eight airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and a backup camera. There is also more available safety technology such as rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and lane departure warning.
