Don't Overpay for Your New Toyota Corolla Hybrid

2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Overview

After taking a hiatus from the Corolla during the compact’s refresh for 2023, Toyota will again be offering Corolla buyers the Nightshade Edition for the 2024 model year. Like other Toyota models with the Nightshade treatment, it doesn’t necessarily make the whole car black, unless you want it that way, but instead adds black exterior trim.

Available on the Corolla sedan, hatchback and hybrid, the Nightshade Edition includes blacked-out badging, bumpers, rocker panels and mirror caps, along with bronze-painted 18-inch wheels. Buyers will have a choice of three colors: Midnight Black Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic and Ice Cap on the sedan and Midnight Black Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic and Windchill Pearl (a bluish, silvery white) on hatchback models. Whatever the color choice, hatchback Nightshade Editions wear a black roof, rear spoiler and pillars, continuing the slow creep of two-tone finishes back into the mainstream.

Aside from the exterior accents, the Nightshade Edition otherwise parallels the Corolla SE in equipment levels. Inside are cloth sport seats, a 4.2-inch digital instrument panel display, an 8-inch touchscreen and Toyota’s suite of driver-assist and safety tech, which includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-centering steering assist, adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam headlights.

The powertrains are also unchanged: The front-wheel-drive sedan and hatchback come with a 169-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and the hybrid has a 138-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder paired with either one (FWD) or two electric motors (all-wheel drive). All powertrains are equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission.

The options list for the Nightshade Edition likewise tracks the non-Nightshade Corolla SE. Options are limited to a nine-speaker, 800-watt JBL sound system and an SE Premium Package consisting of a power moonroof, wireless charging pad, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Toyota hasn’t released 2024 pricing yet for the Corolla, but expect a minimal upcharge for the Nightshade Edition; in 2022, the package added just $700 more to the SE trim. The Nightshade Edition is expected to be at dealerships this fall.
