2017 Subaru WRX STI Overview (See Available Styles)

  • Standard all-wheel drive, 305-hp turbocharged engine
  • STARLINK 7-inch Multimedia Plus System is now standard
  • Available STi Performance Exhaust System
The 2017 Subaru WRX STi is a high-performance version of the compact WRX sedan. It competes with the Ford Focus RS, Volkswagen Golf R, and BMW M3. This year, it remains largely unchanged.

Two trims are available: the base model and Limited.

With rally motorsport competition built into its DNA, the WRX STi is one of the most outlandish looking vehicles on the road. Unlike merely aesthetic sporty cars, the WRX STi is outfitted with fully functional features like a large hood scoop for more air intake and a huge wing spoiler to provide more downforce. The end-result is a hyper-aggressive, sculpted racecar that is ready to beat most commuters to the punch at the red light. The Limited trim has an available rear lip spoiler for those wishing to be more discreet. Standard features include LED headlights, front fog lights, power/heated side mirrors, a dual-pipe exhaust system, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The STi Performance Exhaust System is also available.

Under the hood, the WRX STI features a 305-hp, turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine that makes 290 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a reinforced 6-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy figures check in at an EPA-estimated 17/23 mpg city/highway. The 2015 redesign did bring suspension and chassis updates, which improves the WRX STI’s already superb handling. The suspension as a whole has been stiffened with thicker stabilizer bars and chassis upgrades improve torsional rigidity by 40-percent. There is an active torque vectoring system, which will apply brake pressure to the inside front wheel when turning to make the car more neutral through the turn, and therefore more stable.

Inside, the WRX STi has sporty, Alcantara-upholstered seating with a racing-inspired, flat-bottom steering wheel, aluminum alloy pedals, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The center stack features the now standard STARLINK Multimedia Plus System that includes a 7-inch touchscreen, CD/MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and dual USB ports. It can be upgraded with an integrated navigation system and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows/locks, remote keyless entry, and heated front seats. Leather-trim upholstery, a power driver’s seat, and a push-button start are available as well.

Standard safety features include limited-slip front and rear differentials and a backup camera. Available features include STARLINK Safety Plus and Security Plus Packages (one-year free subscription) for SOS emergency assistance, roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle recovery, and a vehicle locator. Other available features include a blindspot monitoring system and rear cross-traffic alert.

EPA Fuel Economy

  • City: 17 MPG
  • Highway: 23 MPG
