Don't Overpay for Your New Nissan Pathfinder

2024 Nissan Pathfinder Overview

Nissan thoroughly redesigned the Pathfinder for the 2022 model year and fine-tuned trim levels for 2023. For 2024, it seems confident it got things right, as there are no significant changes to the three-row SUV.

Safety First — and Second
All 2024 Pathfinders are fitted with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite as standard equipment. The bundle includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert with automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system and a head-up display are available. Standard on the SV and Rock Creek trims, ProPilot Assist is a semi-autonomous hands-free system that helps with steering, acceleration and braking; on the SL and Platinum, ProPilot Assist teams with the standard navigation system to anticipate curves and freeway exits and adjust speed accordingly.

Powertrain, MPG and Towing Capacity
The Pathfinder’s 284-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine carries over for 2024 and remains paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the off-road-oriented Rock Creek variant makes up to 295 hp with premium gas. Front-wheel drive is standard on all trim levels except the Rock Creek, which is only offered with all-wheel drive; on other trims, AWD is a $1,900 upcharge. Properly equipped, the Pathfinder can tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Oddly, the AWD Pathfinder scores a higher fuel economy rating than the front-driver at 21 mpg city and 27 highway versus 20 mpg in the city for the FWD version, according to Nissan, though both net a combined rating of 23 mpg. The AWD Platinum variant’s numbers fall slightly to 20/25/22 mpg city/highway/combined, and the Rock Creek’s taller suspension, roof rack and all-terrain tires drag its highway rating down to just 23 mpg and its combined figure to 21 mpg.

Versus the Competition
The Pathfinder is sized and priced competitively for its class, but it doesn’t stand out in any particular way against 2024 rivals like the more luxurious Hyundai Palisade, which will start at $37,735, and Kia Telluride ($37,355), the all-around excellent Honda Pilot ($38,465) and Volkswagen Atlas ($39,075), or the Mazda CX-90 ($40,970) with its surprisingly upmarket polish and driving dynamics.
