The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact sedan that seats up to 5 passengers. For 2016, the sedan has been given a front-end facelift and an updated interior. It competes with the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Mazda3, and Nissan Sentra.

Four trims are available: the ES, SE, SEL, and GT.

The new front-end on the Lancer is more smiley than the previous year. Overall, the Lancer maintains its sporty appearance with aggressive headlights, wide-mouth front air vents, and sharp body lines. Heated side mirrors, LED daytime running lights and fog lights come standard. Optional features include a rear spoiler, a power moonroof, and larger 18-inch wheels.

The Lancer ES is powered by a standard 148-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a standard 5-speed manual transmission or a new, optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and four-wheel drive (4WD). The SE and SEL trims come with a larger 168-hp, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder mated to the CVT and 4WD. The GT has the same engine and drive layout with a 5-speed manual or a CVT option. Fuel economy for the Lancer ES manual is an EPA-estimated 24/34 mpg city/highway. It drops to a 23/31 mpg rating for the ES automatic, SE, and SEL trims. The Lancer GT has a 22/31 mpg rating.

Inside, the Lancer features an updated front center console with a standard multimedia system, which includes a color display, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. Other standard features include a 60/40-split folding rear seat, automatic climate control, cruise control, and a tilt steering wheel. Leather-trim seating, heated front seats, an automatic dimming rearview mirror, an integrated navigation system, and a Rockford-Fosgate premium audio system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen are available as well.

The Lancer earned a 4- out of 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the NHTSA. Standard features include front air bags, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and a backup camera.
