2017 MINI MINI-Convertible Exterior

2017 MINI MINI-Convertible Overview (See Available Styles)

  • Cloth-top open in 18 seconds
  • Three powertrain options
  • Limited slip differential is available
The 2017 MINI Convertible is a 2-door, cloth-top version of the MINI Hardtop. It competes with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Fiat 500c, and Volkswagen Beetle.

Three trims are available: the base Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works (JCW).

The MINI Convertible retains the same cute, sporty styling as the MINI Hardtop. The cloth-top can be fully closed, partially opened for a little sunlight, and fully opened in 18 seconds. Heated/power side mirrors and 15-inch alloy wheels come standard. LED headlights, fog lights, and taillights are available as well as bonnet stripes, a dual-pipe exhaust system, and larger 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels. The JCW also has its own unique styling.

Under the hood, the MINI Convertible has three powertrain options. It is powered by a standard 134-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder that makes 162 pounds-feet of torque. Cooper S models get a larger 189-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes 207 pounds-feet of torque, and also offers an overboost function that dials up the torque at the push of a button. Both engines come mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. JCW models have been tuned to produce 228-hp with the same Turbo 2.0-liter.

The Cooper is the more fuel efficient of the two models, topping out at an estimated 30/42 mpg city/highway with the automatic and manual models close behind at 30/41 mpg. The Cooper S gets great fuel economy in its own right, considering how powerful its engine is: 28/40 mpg with the automatic, or 23/37 mpg with the manual.

Inside, the MINI Convertible has an upscale leatherette interior with seating for four passengers. The center stack has a uniquely circular appearance. It features a standard audio system that include CD/MP3 playback, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and a USB port. It can be upgraded to an 8.8-inch touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, and a Harmon Kardon premium audio system. Standard features include an automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote keyless entry, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Leather upholstery, sport seats, and heated front seats are available as well.

The MINI Convertible offers eight standard airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system standard. A backup camera and rear parking sensors are available for safer parking and reversing. Other available features include a limited slip differential and adaptive cruise control.
