Our experience with Mini of Hawaii has been a complete

Reviewed by Nikki from Wahiawa, HIMay 15, 2025

Our experience with Mini of Hawaii has been a complete nightmare. They sold us a car without a clear title. They didn't even have the title when they sold it to us. I didn't think it could get any worse than our experience with Cutter Ford, but Jose said hold my drink and watch this. We purchased a vehicle 18 March 25. It seemed pretty good at first, they gave us what we wanted for our trade and the whole process seemed quick and easy. It took almost six weeks, and us having to consult a lawyer, for the dealership to finally uphold their end of the contract. We spent more than 5 weeks talking to Jose (who ignored all our texts and calls) and Ashlyn in the finance department, trying to get the dealership to uphold their end of the contract and pay off the vehicle we had traded in so we could secure the loan for the vehicle we purchased. She advised us from the beginning that Jose had done the paperwork incorrectly so instead of the dealership paying off our trade in vehicle as per our agreement, they were refusing to give us the money until they had the title to our trade vehicle. We asked her to amend the paperwork to correct the issue, and she refused. In hindsight we now believe they were trying to cover for the fact that they sold us a car they didn't have the title for. On April 24 our trade was finally paid off so we could start the process to fund the loan for the vehicle we purchased on March 18. We are still dealing with the registration issue as of 15 May. Jose gave us the license plates that had been issued to the previous owner instead of issuing a temporary plate and registration as is usually customary with a vehicle purchase. He told us "If you get pulled over just show them the purchase paperwork, you should be fine." We spoke to the DMV on April 25, and they advised us the paperwork for our purchase had not been submitted to them. We reached out to both Jose and the general managers and never received a response from anyone. Our calls and texts were never returned. May 6, we went to the DMV again to ask about the registration, and they again advised us they had not received paperwork for our purchase. We reached out to the bank to see if there was anything they could do to help us. May 12 we finally received a copy of the title to the vehicle we purchased in the mail. It has the previous owner's name and information. May 13 the DMV advised us that we can't register the vehicle or ship it off island when we PCS in less than 2 weeks because legally the previous owner still owns the car. The DMV advised us that we have to get a notarized bill of sale from the previous owner, and the previous owner and the bank have to sign off on the title in order for us to move forward with registering and titling the vehicle in our name. We attempted to contact the dealership multiple times over the last two months to try to get this resolved, but Jose never returned text messages or phone calls, and the general managers did not take our phone calls or call us back. We've purchased more vehicles than I care to admit in 8 different states over the years, and this is by far the absolute worst car buying experience we've ever had. Once they get paid, they do not care about customer service at all. 0/10 would not ever recommend. Especially if you're military.
