The 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a flagship luxury sedan that seats five passengers. An all-wheel drive coupe is available as well. It competes with the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Bentley Flying Spur. This year, a new S 550 2-door Cabriolet makes its way to the lineup. The S 550e Plug-in Hybrid sedan will be covered in a separate overview.

Five trims are available: the S 550, S 550 4MATIC, S 550 Coupe 4MATIC, S 550 Cabriolet, and S 600.

The venerable S-Class stands out as an elite standard among luxury sedans. Regal, yet athletic in appearance, the S-Class sets itself apart from the rest with its signature chrome grille, all-LED exterior lighting, sleek body lines, and big body stature. Swarovski crystal headlights are available for the S 550 Coupe 4MATIC. Standard features include a panoramic moonroof, a power trunk lid, soft-close doors, air suspension, and 19-inch wheels. Sport body styling and larger 20-inch wheels are also available.

All trim models except the S 600 is powered by a standard 449-hp, twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. The S 600 has a 523-hp, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine paired to the same transmission and layout options. Fuel efficiency for the S 550 is an EPA-estimated 17/26 mpg city/highway. It slightly drops to a 16/26 mpg rating for the S 550 4MATIC and 16/24 mpg for the S 550 Coupe 4MATIC. The S 600 is rated 14/21 mpg.

Inside, the S-Class has a handcrafted, luxurious cabin. All S-Class trims have standard leather upholstery with a wood trim, ambient lighting, and a cabin fragrance system. In place of traditional gauges and instrumentation, information and entertainment are displayed through standard dual 12.3-inch widescreens built into the dashboard. Other standard features include an integrated navigation system, dual-zone climate control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, satellite radio, an in-dash hard drive for audio files and playback, and a surround audio system. Heated/ventilated front and rear seats, four-zone climate control, a refrigerator box for the rear, WiFi hotspot, a rear seat entertainment system, and a Burmester premium audio system are available as well.
Standard safety features include an advanced airbag system, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, forward collision warning, braking assist, driver drowsiness monitoring, a backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Night view assist, blind spot assist, cross traffic assist, parking assist, and a surround view camera system for parking and slow driving are also available.
