Having just debuted the CX-50 for 2022, Mazda isn’t making any major changes to its small SUV for 2024. The biggest changes are wireless phone charging for the 2.5 S Premium, plus new shock absorbers and recalibrated power steering, which Mazda says is more in line with its goals of “encouraging more all-terrain adventures.” The 2024 CX-50 starts at $31,675 (all prices include a $1,375 delivery fee).
Trim Levels
The 2024 CX-50 lineup starts off with the 2.5 S Select. Standard equipment includes black 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, tinted glass and rain-sensing wipers. Inside are dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and starting, a 7-inch digital display in the gauge cluster, an eight-speaker audio system, and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and HD radio. Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, blind spot monitors, lane departure warning with lane-centering steering, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Step up to the 2.5 S Preferred and you get heated side mirrors and windshield wipers, a power rear liftgate, heated front seats and eight-way power adjustment for the driver. The 2.5 S Premium adds a panoramic moonroof, wireless phone charging, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system with satellite radio. Premium Plus piles on 20-inch wheels, power-folding side mirrors, a head-up display, and seating upgrades including black leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and six-way power adjustment for the front passenger.
2.5 Turbo variants include shift paddles for drivers who want to be more involved, as well as larger exhaust pipes, LED taillights and adaptive headlights that turn with the steering wheel to better illuminate corners. Moving up to the soft-roader of the CX-50 family, the 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition rides on exclusive 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires and wears unique rocker panel trim and hood graphics.
While the Turbo’s trim levels mirror the 2.5 S in name, content with the more powerful engine slightly outpaces the 2.5 S at every level. The Turbo Premium gets the 12-speaker Bose audio system, but it also nabs ventilated front seats and the power-folding mirrors. The Turbo Premium Plus adds heated rear seats, navigation with traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera system with front and rear parking sensors, and reverse automatic emergency braking.
Performance
For 2024, engine choices remain a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 187 horsepower and 186 pounds-feet of torque, or a turbocharged version good for 256 hp and 320 pounds-feet on premium gas or 227 hp and 310 pounds-feet with regular fuel. All CX-50s have a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Properly equipped, the SUV is rated to tow 2,000 pounds with the naturally aspirated engine or 3,500 with the turbo.
