2016 FIAT 500X Overview (See Available Styles)

  • Brand new model for 2016
  • Subcompact crossover is the latest 500 variant
  • Two four-cylinder engine options (both turbocharged)
Small crossovers are the latest growth segment for the auto industry and FIAT introduces another contender into the mix, the 2016 500X.

Though the FIAT name is Italian, their partnership with Chrysler means that the 500X actually has American underpinnings, sharing a platform with the Jeep Renegade. The 500X still looks like a part of the FIAT lineup, just with more pronounced features and a larger wheelbase. The rounded headlamps and thin grille from the 500 are present but the rest of the bodywork is larger and more rugged in appearance. Just like the 500, FIAT makes the 500X very customizable; there are no less than eight wheel designs in three different sizes.

The 500X is offered in five trim levels: Pop, Easy, Trekking, Lounge, and Trekking Plus, which is the most off-road capable of the bunch. There are two four-cylinder turbocharged engine options. The base engine is only found on Pop models, it is a 160-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. All of the other models get a more powerful 180-hp, turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. The base engine is only offered with a six-speed manual, while the larger 2.4-liter engine comes with a nine-speed automatic. Models with the automatic will also get a standard driving mode selector, which allows the driver to choose between Normal, Sport, and Traction Plus driving modes. Front-wheel drive comes standard, but an all-wheel drive system with a disconnecting rear axle is available

Inside, the 500X seats five passengers and has 18.5 cubic feet of rear cargo room, which expands to 50.8 cubic feet with the 60/40-split rear seat folded down. Much like the exterior, the interior is also highly customizable with seven different material configurations. A five-inch center screen comes standard, with a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen optional. Standard features include air conditioning, USB port, and steering wheel mounted audio controls. Moving up to the Easy trim level adds Bluetooth connectivity and Uconnect, one of our favorite infotainment systems. Other options include leather upholstery, HD radio, remote start, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats.

Standard safety features on the 2016 500X include six airbags, antilock brakes, and an electronic stability system. Plenty of safety technology is available as well, including a rear view camera, rear park assist, blind spot warnings with rear cross-path detection, and lane departure warnings.
