2016 Chevrolet Malibu Overview (See Available Styles)

  • Redesigned for 2016
  • Improved fuel economy
  • New Teen Driver Safety System available
The redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu offers more practicality, comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency. In order to stay competitive in the midsize sedan market, Chevrolet has filled the Malibu with numerous technologies such as the MyLink multimedia system, Teen Driver Safety System, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Four trims are available: the L, LS, LT, and Premier. A hybrid version of the Malibu is also available.

The sharper appearance of the new Malibu is less bubbly and more aerodynamic than its predecessor. It has a near 4-inch longer wheelbase, yet it weighs 300 pounds less than the previous generation. Its weight reduction can be attributed to the thinner steel components found in its new body structure. The traditional fog lamps have been replaced with new LED daytime running lamps. LED taillights, power sunroof, and 19-inch wheels are also available.

Two engines are available: a 163-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, and a 250-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. With the 1.5 liter engine equipped, the Malibu gets an EPA estimated 27/37 mpg city/highway. With the more powerful 2.0 liter engine, those figures drop to 22/33 mpg. The 1.5- liter engine comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0- liter engine comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. With the 1.5-liter engine equipped, the Malibu gets an EPA estimated 27/37 mpg city/highway. With the more powerful 2.0-liter engine, those figures drop to 22/33 mpg.
For all Malibu trims except the base model, the MyLink multimedia system comes standard with a 7- or 8- inch touch-screen.  It offers easy integration with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for navigation, music, and other integrated apps. WiFi hotspot capability via an OnStar 4G LTE connection (subscription required) is available, as is a multi-port, wireless phone charging station. The Malibu has other upscale interior options such as leather seating, heated driver and front passenger seats, and a Bose speaker system. It also has increased legroom by 1.3 inches for the rear. The Malibu comes standard with air conditioning, cruise control, Driver Information Center, and power windows/locks.

GM has added a new Teen Driver safety system into the Malibu, allowing parents to monitor their teenager’s driving habits on screen. It keeps track of maximum speeds reached and how many safety systems had been activated. Parents can also set restrictive speed limits. The Malibu also offers new, optional safety features including a pedestrian-detecting automatic braking system, adaptive cruise control, automatic parking, and lane keep assist. The Malibu comes standard with an electronic stability control system and 10 air bags.
