2017 Buick Encore Overview (See Available Styles)

  • Revised exterior and interior styling
  • Newly available Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • 153-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder available
The 2017 Buick Encore is a compact SUV that seats 5 passengers. It competes with the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4. This year, it has been given a mid-cycle refresh to its exterior and interior.

Six trims are available: the 1SV, Preferred, Sport Touring, Preferred II, Essence, and Premium.

Overall, the Encore retains its round shape, but it has traded its bubbly, cute appearance for more aggressive styling. The new headlight and front fascia designs make the Encore look angrier. The rear fascia and taillights have also received slight alterations. Lastly, the underbody has much less dark-clad trim this time around. Power/heated side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, roof rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels come standard. Available features include LED headlights, LED daytime running lamps, front fog lights, exterior chrome accents, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Under the hood, the Encore is powered by a standard 138-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is also available for all models. The Sport Touring trim is tuned to produce 153-hp with a Turbo 1.4 with a start-stop system for improved efficiency. Fuel economy for the FWD model is an EPA-estimated 25/33 mpg city highway. It lowers to a 24/30 mpg rating for the AWD model.

Inside, the Encore has a revised interior with a cock-pit style design and new instrumentation. The cabin has standard leatherette seating with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 48.4 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down. The center stack features the standard Buick IntelliLink multimedia system that includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Siri Eyes Free Mode with voice recognition, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, and dual USB ports. It can be upgraded with an integrated navigation system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot (subscription required), and a Bose premium audio system. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows/locks, remote keyless entry, and push-button start. Leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle start, an automatic dimming rearview mirror, power/heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel are available as well.

The Encore earned a full 5-star overall crash test safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Standard safety features include a backup camera and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available features include a blindspot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, front and rear park assist, and lane departure warning.
