Buyer Beware - Used Cars

I live out of state and purchased a pre-owned (non Acura/Honda) vehicle with slightly over 100K miles.  The body and interior of the vehicle looked great and the test drive went well, although the exhaust seemed a bit louder than I would have expected. I arrived back home in the dark and parked the car in my driveway.  In the morning, I noticed a pool of oil underneath the vehicle.  I took it to a local auto shop and had them take a closer look. The oil leak would turn out to be the least of my concerns.  Turns out both front axles, ball joints, fuel lines, and head gasket need to be replaced.  The driveshaft is loose and needs to be looked at as well. This vehicle was not safe to drive and will not pass state inspection as is.  The repairs needed will cost $3K-$4K. I called the dealership and left a message for Tony Sollecito, the General Manager at Acura of Valley Stream.  I sent Tony an email documenting my concerns with photographs.  I called and left a 2nd voice message for Tony.  None of my communications were replied to. I called Acura Corporate HQ to express my grievance.  They were highly professional and helpful.  They offered to call the dealership and patch me in.  Only then Tony answered without hesitation and I was given an opportunity to voice my concerns.  He asked me how many miles were on the vehicle.  When I told him >100K, he was immediately dismissive and told me there was nothing he could do.  Apparently, vehicles with >100K miles are sold "as is" in NYS. I wrongly assumed that pre-owned vehicles sold by brand name dealers went through some sort of check and vetting process before being placed on the lot.  I figured an Acura dealership has a reputation to uphold which would preclude situations like this from occurring.   I expected this dealership to be forthright in advertising any vehicle they put on their lot, which was not the case.   I'm certain this is common practice as this dealership.  Do not purchase a vehicle with >100K mi from this dealership without first getting it checked.  Acura of Valley Stream will never earn my business again.

Terrible attitudes and lack of communication! Do yourself a favor and save your self the headache and buy a vehicle somewhere else. Long story short I spoke to saws rep Anthony (who was very nice). I inquired about an Acura RDX on their website. I spoke with Anthony and he said he car was in the shop getting a seat replaced it had a tear. I’m from out of state and was willing to travel to purchase the car. I offered to put the deposit on it but he said to wait and he would call me as soon it got out of the shop. I called today because I hadn’t heard from him and spoke to Tom. Tom said Anthony wasn’t it but he checked with his used car manager and the car was back. I gave Anthony my credit card number for the deposit. He said he would call me back in about an hour for the buyers order and send me a video of the car. It had been a few hours without hearing from him so I called back. Tom said the car already had a deposit on it. Frustrated I asked to speak to his manager. Mike the used car manager came on the line very dismissive. No empathy he said “it slipped through the cracks”. I told him if that’s how yo do business I wouldn’t spend my money you. While trying to ensure they didn’t charge my card he hung up on me. This is not at all what I expect from an Acura dealership and they should make this right. I will be spreading the word about my experience. I hope the shredded my credit card info.
