2014 Chevrolet Volt Coupe/Hatchback Overview
- 2014 model gets a $5,000 price drop
- 38 miles of electric range, total range of 380 miles
- Seating for four passengers
Back for 2014 with updated styling and a big discount, the 2014 Chevrolet Volt now offers even more value to go along with emissions and gas-free motoring.
The Volt straddles the line between an electric car and a gas car, offering both electric-only range and a gasoline engine that serves as a “range extender” when the electric juice runs out. Fully charged, the 2014 Volt can travel up to 38 miles on electric power only, which Chevy is quick to point out is longer than most commutes. Once that runs out, the gasoline motor kicks in and drives an electric generator which sends juice to the electric motor. This gives the Volt a huge advantage over pure electric vehicles – no range anxiety, no being stranded without power.
The Volt's $5,000 discount for the new model year is also notable. After federal tax incentives of up to $7,500, the base price of a Volt effectively drops to $27,495 which puts it in the price range of many midsize sedans.
Styling on the Volt puts practicality before beauty, with an aerodynamic shape and pronounced black side skirts that help it to slide through the air. Piano black trim glistens under the windows on both sides. Thankfully, Chevy ditched the black roof and it now matches the rest of the exterior paint. 17-inch aluminum wheels, LED daytime running lights, and powered/heated side mirrors are standard.
As previously mentioned, under the hood there are both electric and gas motors. The electric motor produces 149-hp and 273 pounds-feet of torque and is powered by a 350-volt, 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The gas engine is a 1.4-liter four cylinder that takes premium gasoline. Combined range for the battery and the gas range extender is 380 miles (the first 38 miles are electric only). The gasoline engine, when engaged, returns 35/40 mpg city/highway.
Charging takes 10-12 hours via a normal household outlet, but a 240-volt charging station drops charging time to four hours (the station is sold and installed separately). The Volt is capable of smart charging, which allows owners to schedule charging times at off-peak hours which increases savings.
The Volt’s large T-shaped battery pack cuts through where the middle seat would normally go, so it only seats four passengers. The battery pack also cuts into cargo room, which is 10.6 cubic feet. There are however plenty of standard features, including automatic air conditioning, cruise control, Chevy’s MyLink multimedia system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and internet radio (Pandora and Stitcher). The center console opts for futuristic touch-sensitive controls over traditional dials which only adds to the Volt’s futuristic air.
The 2014 Volt can also be lauded for its performance in crash tests, earning a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Standard safety features include knee, side-impact, and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and OnStar.
