- Refreshed design inside and out
- Newly available driver assistance technology
- Gasoline and diesel engines available
The 2015 Volkswagen Touareg gets a refresh for the new model years, with new exterior and interior designs to go along with new safety technology.
The line-topping Touareg has always blurred the lines between premium and luxury with its high-class appointments and handsome, if stoic styling. This latest iteration of the Touareg extends that even further, with a new exterior design that adds a bit of sleekness to the midsize SUVs profile. A new four-bar grille sits up front and feeds directly into the restyled headlight clusters. The lower part of the fascia has also been redone and makes the front look more aggressive than the previous model. Bi-Xenon headlights and LED taillights come standard, along with an adaptive front-lighting system, a trailer hitch for towing, and a power rear liftgate. A motion-activated liftgate is also available, making it easy to open the rear cargo area even when your hands are full.
Both engine options, one gas and one diesel, carryover from 2014. The base engine is a 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 with 266 pounds-feet of torque and returns 17/23 mpg city/highway. For those who want extra torque or better fuel efficiency, the Touareg also offers a 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter diesel V-6 with 406 pounds-feet of torque. It returns 20/29 MPG city/highway, very good fuel economy numbers for a car of this size. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard on all models.
Interior design changes include several new color schemes, added chrome and wood trim pieces for a more premium feel, and ambient white LED lighting. The Touareg offers plenty of cargo room, with 32.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which expands to 64 cubic feet with the second row folded down. Standard features are plentiful, with leatherette upholstery, heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, premium touch-screen stereo system, and Bluetooth/iPod connectivity. Higher trims only add to the options list, including a premium Dynaudio stereo, leather seats, satellite navigation, and heated rear seats.
The 2015 Touareg also adds safety technology, with newly available driver aids including adaptive cruise control, lane assist, and an automatic post-collision braking system. Standard safety features include six airbags, antilock brakes, traction control, side-impact door beams, and a steel safety cage all standard. Additionally, each Touareg gets ICRS (Intelligent Crash Response System) which unlocks the doors, cuts the fuel pump, and turns on the hazards in the event of a crash. The Touareg also offers an Area View camera system, which uses four cameras located around the exterior of the vehicle to display a complete view of the SUVs surroundings on the touchscreen.
