The original Rabbit was an innovative concept that changed the landscape of compact cars forever: combine a peppy, fuel-efficient motor with a cute, utilitarian hatchback body shape at a very affordable price. The 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit continues that tradition with a host of upscale features, European styling, and a more powerful engine this year.
The Rabbit is available in 2-door or 4-door hatchback configurations in one trim line: the Rabbit S. The standard 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine now produces170 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque for peppy acceleration and good passing power. It’s mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission that offers crisp shifting or an innovative 6-speed automatic DSG® transmission with Tiptronic® and Sport mode for rapid gear changes without the use of a traditional clutch pedal. Standard front-wheel drive offers excellent traction in a variety of weather conditions, while the 4-wheel independent suspension offers great road feel and a comfortable ride.
Safety features are abundant, including standard Anti-Slip Regulation that prevents wheelspin on slippery surfaces. Standard 4-wheel disc brakes with Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution, Hydraulic Brake Assist, and Engine Braking Assist offer excellent stopping power and help to prevent wheel lockup. Standard dual front airbags, dual side thorax airbags, and side curtain protection airbags along with optimized head restraints offer excellent passenger protection in a collision. A standard Tire Pressure Monitoring system alerts the driver to any changes in tire pressure with a warning symbol on the instrument panel. Standard Bi-Xenon High Intensity Discharge headlamps with auto-leveling offer excellent visibility and increased illumination.
The upscale, plush interior features available heated front seats and a 60/40 split folding rear seatback for easy cargo access. An optional power glass sunroof features tilt, slide, tinted glass, and a manual sunshade for excellent cabin ventilation. Available 18” alloy wheels and summer performance tires push handling and style into a new realm. Manual single-zone climate control offers a cool cabin environment. Standard 8-way manual front sport seats offer excellent support and comfort. The standard Premium VII radio with in-dash 6-disch CD changer, MP3 compatibility, an iPod® connector, SIRIUS® Satellite Radio, and 10 speakers offers a rockin’ sound.
With an amazing array of standard amenities, ample power, and hatchback versatility, the 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit is an all-around outstanding compact with an upscale flavor.
