2009 Volkswagen Passat Overview
Looking to improve on an already-impressive reputation, the 2009 Volkswagen Passat showcases a sharp and smooth design for the midsize sedan category without all the expensive frills on previous versions. And the response to such attention of this car buyer’s needs: a resounding “YES!”

The German automaker has dropped its well-received 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive into either Passat sedan or wagon body style. Good for 200-horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control comes standard. With just a single trim level, drivers have found enough acceleration and kick to not raise their arms for the added power and price of a V-6.

Able to volley well with competition including the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima, the Passat is finely-tuned for comfort and driving ease. A silent interior cabin drowns road noise at higher speeds and steering is light for drivers and sharp for the ride. Fuel economy is fair for this combination of low-end torque and maxed-out horsepower with 19 MPG city and 29 MPG highway.

The Passat's upscale cabin is one of its strongest features, with precision to all the controls and a superb finish to interior materials and trims. Standard equipment on the sedan version includes 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, air-conditioning, premium leatherette vinyl upholstery; power heated front seats and an eight-speaker sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer. The wagon adds chrome roof rails for cargo hauling needs.

Front- and side-impact crash tests garnered the Passat above-average marks for increased safety. Antilock disc brakes, stability control, anti-whiplash front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags are all standard, while rear-seat side airbags are an optional amenity one should also take advantage of.

Peeling away previously-available yet relatively trivial features to showcase an affordable price with more-than-equal value, the 2009 Volkswagen Passat is sure to appeal to the masses with its pleasing balance of ride comfort and handling.
