If it’s true what they say about cars reflecting the personalities of their owners, then buyers of the 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle must be a fun and spunky bunch. Just like its predecessors, the iconic “bug” never ceases to make its owners smile with unbearable delight.

Available in two trim lines – New Beetle and 2.5L – the car comes as a cute 2-door hatchback or strikingly beautiful convertible. The standard 2.5 liter 5-cylinder engine makes 150 horsepower, enough to offer peppy performance and decent fuel economy ratings. A standard 5-speed manual transmission lets you shift gears to your heart’s content, while a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic offers fun manumatic shifting.

In addition to the requisite bud vase on the dashboard, the New Beetle has a ton of useful interior features. The optional power sunroof on the hatchback lets the sweet sunshine inside, while available heated front seats have 5 settings to help find your perfect comfort zone. The optional 6-speaker sound system has an in-dash MP3-readable CD player with satellite radio compatibility to provide a rockin’ sound, while the auxiliary audio connector fits your Ipod® to a tee.

The New Beetle is as safe as it is adorable. Standard dual front airbags and dual seat-mounted side airbags protect passengers like a cocoon. A standard anti-lock braking system with hydraulic brake assist stops the bug on a dime. Anti-slip regulation help to prevent wheel slippage at all speed, while electronic stability control assists the driver in maintaining control during evasive maneuvers. The standard brake pad wear indicator helps to prevent rotor damage by indicating wear level on the dash, and the tire pressure monitoring system alerts the driver when pressure is getting too low.

The same virtues that drew people to the original bug are still present in the 2008 Volkswagen New Beetle – it’s cute, fun-to-drive, economical, and very affordable.
