2012 Volkswagen Jetta Overview

The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan with seating for five and a gas or diesel engine. The Jetta is available in several trim levels – S, SE, SEL, TDI and the GLI, which has been updated for 2012. The Jetta also has a SportWagen version available in all trim levels but the GLI.

The base model Jetta S comes with a 115-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. The SE and SEL get a more powerful 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission (the SEL Premium gets the six-speed automatic standard, while it is optional on the other trims). The TDI (diesel) is powered by a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder clean diesel engine. Rounding things out is the sporty Jetta GLI with its 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission. Upgrading to the six-speed automatic transmission is available for all standard manual trims and includes Tiptronic and sport modes for auto/manual shifting and enhanced acceleration performance. Paddle shifters are available on the TDI and GLI models.

The Jetta’s fuel economy varies depending on which engine is equipped. Base fuel economy is 22-24 mpg in the city and 29-34 mpg on the highway with the 2.0-liter gas engine. Opting for the 2.5-liter engine bumps those numbers to 23-24 mpg in the city and 31-33 mpg on the highway. But the king of the mountain is the efficient TDI, which returns 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway with its diesel engine, rivaling or surpassing most hybrids.

The Jetta boasts a roomy interior and comes with six-way manually adjustable front seats with available adjustable lumbar support, and heated front seats. The 60/40 split-folding rear seats have an available center armrest and pass-through with integrated cup holders. The steering wheel is height adjustable with a telescoping steering column, and a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel with Bluetooth and audio controls is available. Interior details include available leather-wrapped brake handle and shift knob, and chrome and metallic accents. The sedan offers over 15 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, while the wagon provides over 32 cubic feet of storage, and almost 67 cubic feet of storage with the rear passenger seats folded down.

Entertainment upgrades include Bluetooth® connectivity, satellite radio, and Media Device Interface with iPod cable. A touch screen premium sounds system, Fender premium sound system, and navigation system are also available. The Jetta SportWagen offers a choice of eight- or ten-speaker sound system in addition to most premium upgrades.

The Jetta features conservative styling with clean lines and a black grille. Standard wheel options start at 15-inch steel, with available 16-inch wheels alloy wheels. A power tilting/sliding tinted sunroof is available for all trim levels. Styling on the GLI model features 17-inch alloy wheels with an 18-inch upgrade optional, iconic GLI honeycomb grille and red accents, vertical fog lamps, smoked taillights, and duel exhaust tips.

Safety features include a total of six airbags, antilock brakes, electronic stability, and traction control. A crash response system automatically disables the fuel pump, unlocks doors, and activates hazard lights in the event of a collision.

The 2012 Jetta provides a spacious ride in either a sedan or wagon style, and offers a wide range of trim levels to satisfy a wide range of budgets.
