2012 Volkswagen GTI Overview

The 2012 Volkswagen GTI, available in a two- or four-door hatchback, is the high performance sibling of the Golf, and provides seating for five passengers. An Autobahn package includes premium interior options for enhanced style and convenience.

The GTI is powered by a 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder turbocharged intercooled engine, and standard six-speed manual transmission. The optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission includes Tiptronic auto/manual and sport modes, and paddle shifters. Standard track-tuned sport suspension and optional XDS cross differential system improve performance with better handling, cornering and acceleration.

The GTI has a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission, and 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with the automatic transmission.

Eight-way manual driver and front passenger sport seats with lumbar support with heated seating are standard in all trim levels. Power recline for the driver’ seat is standard in four-seat models, and two seat models feature an easy entry sliding system for better access to rear seats. The rear passenger seats fold down with a 60/40 split configuration. Cloth upholstery is standard for most trim levels, and leather upholstery is included with the Autobahn package. The standard leather-wrapped steering wheel includes available multi-function audio controls, and the brake handle and shift knob are also leather-wrapped. The audio system includes satellite radio, Bluetooth hands-free calling, Media Device Interface, and auxiliary jack for portable audio players. The rear passenger seats provide ample head and legroom for two adults, and the cargo area supplies over 15 cubic feet of storage space and comes with a rear cargo cover. Power windows, locks and side mirrors are standard, and keyless entry can be upgraded to keyless access with remote start with the Autobahn package.

The GTI gets a sporty look with a honeycomb grille with racing red accents, and 18-inch alloy wheels with a scalloped design that reveals bright red brake calipers. The hatchback features a rear spoiler and logo integrated hatch handle for smooth, integrated lines, and dual tailpipes complement the sport valance bumpers. Halogen headlamps include LED running lights and geometric fog lamps accent the black honeycomb air dam to create an aggressive statement. The Autobahn package includes a spoke-designed 18-inch wheel with all performance tires.

Six airbags provide protection in a collision and include front-seat side-impact and side curtain airbags. Antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability control provide added safety on the road and during braking, and a tire protection monitoring system ensures tires are kept at optimal levels for safety and performance. Intelligent crash response turns off the fuel pump, unlocks doors and turns on hazard lights in the event of a collision.

The 2012 Volkswagen GTI mixes functionality and driving fun with a solid balance of sporty features and standard amenities. The front and rear interior space provides a spacious, comfortable ride and the quality of the interior features confirms that the GTI is a good value for the price.
