2011 Volkswagen GTI Overview

Anytime you can buy a car that features ‘Autobahn Package’, you know you’re heading in the right direction and right at the sporty 2011 Volkswagen GTI hatchback.

The 2011 Volkswagen GTI is the more-powerful brother of the Golf and is also available in two- and four-door versions.  A 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 207 pounds-feet of torque and is paired to either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.  The Cross Differential System (XDS) uses electronic limited-slip control, which actively anticipates wheel spin and sends power to the outside wheel when cornering.  A track-tuned sport suspension hugs the road while Launch control allows you to build turbo boost before you start moving so you can get to 60 mph faster than ever.  Fuel economy ratings are quite impressive at 21-24 mpg in the city and 31-33 on the highway and the GTI competes with other small sporty hatchbacks the Subaru WRX, Mazdaspeed3, and Mini Cooper S.

As a hint to the 2011 GTI’s performance-oriented nature, it receives a sharper exterior that includes laser seam welding, red brake calipers, 18-inch Detroit alloy wheels, logo hatch handle, blackened honeycomb grille with two red outlining stripes, dual tailpipes, and optional xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and power moonroof.  Seat up to five occupants with ribbed and bolstered sport seats in the front.  Volkswagen features a retro plaid design on the seating surfaces, which it calls ‘Interlagos’.

The rear seat has 60/40-split capability, while heated and height-adjustable front seats are standard.  Other standard features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift, power windows and locks, keyless entry, air conditioning, cruise control, and a USB/iPod-compatible audio system.  Leather upholstery, touch-screen stereo, navigation system, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a Dynaudio premium audio system, and a keyless access system with remote start are optional.

As far as safety is concerned, the 2011 Volkswagen GTI features front, side-impact, and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes, an electronic stability control system, and traction control.  The Intelligent Crash Response System unlocks the doors, turns off the power to the fuel pump, and turns on the hazard lights in the event of an accident.

Enjoy the thrill of driving whether you’re on the Autobahn or not in the 2011 Volkswagen GTI.
