2012 Volkswagen Golf Overview (See Available Styles)

The 2012 Volkswagen Golf is available in a two-door or four-door model, and choice of gasoline or diesel engine (TDI). Two-door, gasoline engine and all diesel models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission with available automatic transmission. Four-door gasoline engine models are only available with an automatic transmission. The popular Golf combines European styling with solid performance and a quality interior.

The gas-powered Golf comes with a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, inline five-cylinder engine, and the available transmissions are five-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic auto/manual and sport modes. The TDI Golf comes with a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter, inline four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine, with standard six-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission with Tiptronic auto/manual and sport modes. The TDI Golf also includes a sport-tuned suspension.

Fuel economy ratings for the gasoline-powered Golf range from 23 to 24 mpg in the city and 31 to 33 mpg on the highway. The TDI Golf’s diesel engine performs at 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

Both two- and four-door models seat five passengers. The manually adjustable front seats and 60/40-split rear folding seats are upholstered with a black cloth surface, and include lumbar support and available heated seats for the driver and front passenger. Power recline is available for the driver’s seat in the four-door models, and the two-door models include an easy entry system that allows the front seats to slide forward for easy rear access. Power windows feature an automatic one-touch driver’s side open/close function, and power door locks with keyless entry come standard. The cargo area provides 15 cubic feet of storage space, and comes with a fully carpeted and lined luggage compartment with rear cargo cover. The base model Golf includes an AM/FM/CD/MP3 and WMA sound system. Available upgrades include an adjustable front center armrest, Bluetooth hands free calling, a cold weather package, power tilting/sliding tinted sunroof, a touch screen premium sounds system, satellite radio, and a media device interface with iPod cable.

The Golf’s hatchback design incorporates a logo handle hatch for a cleaner look, and the front end includes a separate grille and air dam. The halogen headlights include LED running lights and chip-resistant lenses. Mirrors, moldings, door handles and bumpers are body color for a sleek look, and metallic paint is available at no extra charge. Standard wheels are 15-inch steel with full wheel covers and all-season tires.

The Volkswagen Golf has six airbags – drive and front passenger front and side airbags, and side curtain head-protection airbags for front and rear passengers. Antilock brakes, traction control and electronic stability control are standard safety features. The four-door Golf includes child-safety rear door locks. The front end is designed with impact-absorption for added safety in a collision, and crash response will turn off the fuel pump, unlock doors and deploy hazard lights.

The 2012 Volkswagen Golf leads in passenger space, excels in performance, and provides excellent handling for a fun-to-drive hatchback with a great sense of style.
