When it comes to horsepower, the Ranger packs quite a wallop and will knock the Toyota Tacoma down a few rungs. On the flip side, remember that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their comparable turning radii, the Toyota and the Ford Ranger most definitely handle approximately the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The Toyota Tacoma's engine is substantially larger than the Ford's. Remember that more massive engines may use more gas than smaller ones. The Ford Ranger could learn a lesson or two from the Toyota in terms of pickup.

Utility
The Ford Ranger and the Toyota can accommodate the same number of passengers. There's no clear winner between the Toyota and the Ford Ranger with respect to hauling capacity. There's little the Toyota Tacoma can tow that the Ford Ranger cannot.

The Ford Ranger doesn't pale in comparison to the Tacoma as far as fuel economy. Producing an accurate fuel economy evaluation is so difficult that some think not even the federal government can do it, but it looks as though both the Tacoma and the Tacoma perform roughly comparably in terms of fuel economy. When it comes to MSRP, the Ford Ranger doesn't cost much less than the Toyota Tacoma.

The Toyota Tacoma and the Ford have the same basic after-sale protection.
