- Gets a big update for 2016, with new styling and an updated interior
- New V-6 engine runs on the efficient Atkinson cycle
- Access or Double cab body styles (no more Regular Cab)
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma gets a large, much needed update for 2016 that adds new exterior styling, an updated interior, and a new V-6 engine.
The arrival of new competition to the midsize truck segment in the form of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon forced Toyota’s hand a bit; the Tacoma was the segment leader by default for several years but with new entries, they needed to rearm and reassess the Tacoma in the face of new challengers.
Styling is now more similar to what is seen on the larger Tundra, with larger fenders giving the sides of the Tacoma some needed definition. Up front, the grille is now pinched in at the bottom giving it a hexagonal shape. The name Tacoma is also now stamped into the tailgate, a more attractive option than a standard badge. There are now two available cab sizes: Access and Double (Regular Cabs are no longer offered), both of which offer two rows of seating. The Double Cab is also offered with short and long bed lengths.
Under the hood, the Tacoma has two engine options. The first is a carryover from last year, a 159-hp, 2.7-liter four-cylinder, while the old V-6 has been replaced by a new 278-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 that runs on the efficient Atkinson cycle. There is also a new six-speed automatic transmission which replaces the outdated four-speed box on the old Tacoma. A five- or six-speed manual transmission is still available on select models.
The Tacoma is offered in five trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited, which is the most luxurious. Standard features include air conditioning, a display audio system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls. Also available are navigation, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Qi wireless charging port, and satellite radio.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, Toyota’s Star Safety System (which includes traction control, VSC, and antilock brakes among other features), and six airbags.
