One of the most family friendly vehicles around, the 2013 Toyota Sienna has the space to get people and cargo wherever you need them to go and the amenities to make sure they’re comfortable while doing it.
I’m unashamed to admit that I have a soft spot for minivans and by extension, the Sienna. It was redesigned two years ago to update its styling and for 2013 there are a few minor updates, most notably the dropping of the four-cylinder from the engine options list meaning the 3.5-liter V-6 is now the only engine option. There is also an added blind spot warning system on the XLE and Limited trims, while the LE adds easy-clean fabric, a power driver’s seat, and tri-zone automatic climate control.
You don’t buy a minivan because they’re particularly pleasant to look at and the Sienna is no exception. It has plenty of curves and creases which make it interesting, but its dimensions prevent it from being attractive – something we could say about every other minivan on the market as well. It’s not all bad though: for easier entry, exit, and loading, the Sienna offers a power liftgate as well as power sliding doors.
As previously mentioned, there’s only one available engine for the Sienna but it’s a good one: a 266-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 that also outputs 245 pounds-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available for those who live in areas with more inclement weather conditions. Front-wheel drive versions of the 2013 Sienna returns 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, while all-wheel drive versions get 16 and 23 mpg respectively.
The Sienna splits its features over five trim levels: L, LE, SE, XLE, and Limited. Seating for seven is standard thanks to a pair of second row captain’s chairs, but can be expanded to eight with an optional second row center seat that is removable and can be stored in a nook behind the third row. When needed, the Sienna can transition easily from transporting people to cargo. The third row folds completely into the floor to make a flat cargo floor and the second row seats can be removed, to give a maximum storage capacity of 150 cubic feet.
Standard features in the Sienna include cruise control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and an auxiliary audio input for the stereo. The Sienna can also be outfitted with plenty of tech options, such as a navigation system, tri-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth, iPod/USB port, and the Entune infotainment system which connects the Sienna to your smartphone. Our favorite option is the extra wide rear flip-down screen that can actually split between two different inputs, so the kids don’t have to fight over control of the screen.
For family vehicles like the Sienna safety is a paramount concern. Thankfully, the Sienna delivers when it comes to safety, earning a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. Standard safety features include antilock brakes, electronic stability and traction control, side curtain airbags for all three rows, and active front head restraints. Optional safety technology includes a backup camera, blindspot warning system, and adaptive cruise control.
