In terms of horsepower, the Subaru Impreza packs quite a punch and will knock the Toyota Matrix down a few rungs. On the flip side, remember that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their comparable turning circles, the Subaru Impreza and the Toyota Matrix definitely handle about the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The Toyota Matrix's engine is significantly smaller than the Subaru Impreza's. Bear in mind that smaller engines can be stressed more; on the other hand, smaller engines typically get better gas mileage. Torque equals pickup, and the Impreza will have picked up and gone by the time the Toyota Matrix finally gets moving.
