2009 Toyota Matrix Overview
Fine around-town maneuverability

The 2009 Toyota Matrix is redesigned, with more power, slightly modified styling and no change in size. Since its original rollout in 2003, the Matrix retains its function as a tall-body wagon version of the Toyota Corolla compact sedan.

Toyota offers three Matrix styles. The Base trim has a 132-hp 1.8-liter engine. S and sporty XRS trims have a 158-hp 2.4-liter engine that develops 162 lb.-ft. of torque and still gets EPA-estimated 21 city/29 highway mpg ratings. All Matrix styles are front-wheel. The 4-speed, automatic-only Matrix S comes equipped with all-wheel drive. The 5-speed automatic in the S and XRS features a sequential shift mode. Toyota says this gives you optimal control over the gears while you carve up the road (riding on 18” wheels in the XRS, or 16” for the S and Base).

A nice surprise with the new Matrix is its versatility. The front passenger seat folds down and the rear 60/40 split-bench seat folds flat to create impressively deep cargo space, complete with anti-slip rubber strips in the floor. The tilt/telescopic steering column is driver-convenient. A first-time option is the new navigation system with large, accessible dials. Matrix tall-design allows for ample headroom and firm, chair-high seats.

The Matrix dashboard features brightly lit, colorful LED gauges that look sharp while reducing eyestrain. Crank up the engine, and the gauge needles “come alive” by completing a full sweep. The auxiliary audio jack can be used as a charging station for your music player, cell phone, or portable game player on the go. Audio-activated Bluetooth Wireless technology allows for hands-free phone calls.

Acceleration in the Base style feels smoother than in the sportier from the S and XRS. Drive grip and balance are better in the AWD S; for the XRS, they’re sports-car sharp. The latter styles have independent rear suspension - their sportier drive gives them an edge over rivals like the Nissan Versa and Scion xB.

The 2009 Toyota Matrix is a small wagon with the right blend of comfort and power for hip city driving.
