2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Overview
Descended from a long line of capable off-road vehicles, the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser is engineered to tackle some of the most extreme off-road conditions, including 20 degree grades, 3-foot deep rapids, and gargantuan boulders. For those less inclined to subject the FJ Cruiser to such challenges, it offers a host of functional features for city dwellers and suburbanites alike. With a modern yet retro design, the FJ Cruiser harkens back to the original Toyota FJ40 introduced to the U.S. in 1958. The innovative two-door SUV offered open-air motoring, four-wheel drive, and abundant off-road thrills. It subsequently became an icon, enjoying two decades of success before spawning Toyota's four-door Land Cruiser. The FJ Cruiser is available in three drivetrain configurations – rear-wheel 2-wheel-drive or part-time 4-wheel drive in automatic transmission models, and full-time 4-wheel drive for manual transmission models. The grunt is provided by a gutsy 4.0 liter DOHC 24-valve SFI VVT-i V6 engine pumping out 239 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, which can be mated to a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic overdrive transmission (ECT) or 6-speed manual transmission (full-time 4WD model only). Advanced safety features are a must in a vehicle with such rugged dynamics. The highlight is the Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), a 4-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) with Brake Assist. Also included are dual front, dual stage airbags, dual front seat-mounted airbags, and front-and second-row side curtain airbags. Option packages add a wide range of unique features. The All-Terrain Package adds BFGoodrich® Rugged Trail Tires, off-road 16” 5-spoke alloy wheel, trail-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, Cyclone air pre-cleaner, rear differential lock with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and a multi-information display with inclinometer, compass, and temperature. The Convenience Package includes remote keyless entry, cruise control, power outside mirrors, rear privacy glass, rear wiper, rear Intuitive Parking Assist, Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and back-up sonar. Upgrade Package 1 adds 17” 6-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, A-TRAC (4WD models), locking rear differential, AM/FM 6-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3/WMA playback capability and eight speakers, a leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls, and aluminum brush transmission lever and transfer lever. Upgrade Package 2 adds to the above features an upgraded stereo system with nine speakers including a powerful sub-woofer with off-switch. Leaving other SUVs in the dust, the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser offers a blend of retro-inspired styling, proven off-road capability, and a wealth of features to tame the urban jungle. No matter the terrain or the task, it’s up to the challenge. |
