Toyota Corolla vs. Volkswagen Jetta Review

Utility
The Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Jetta sedans are about even for interior room, while the Jetta has a big 3.7 cubic-foot advantage in luggage space. However, the Jetta offers a wagon bodystyle, which makes the luggage capacity gap completely incomparable.

Performance
Powering the 2010 Toyota Corolla is your choice of a 132-horsepower, 1.8-liter inline-four or a 158-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The Jetta offers a trio of sturdy engines from the 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine (whose torque gives more thrust than you expect from the horsepower rating) to the 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder gas engine. In between is a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter inline-five. All three Jetta engines are sure to leave the Corolla in the rearview mirror.

Fuel Economy
Thanks to the diesel motor, the Jetta gets a huge advantage in fuel economy with 20-30 mpg city and 29-41 mpg highway ratings. Corolla follows with 22-26 mpg city and 30-35 mpg highway results.

Technology
The base model Jetta comes a bit less equipped than a similarly-priced mid-range Corolla, notably due to the lack of an available navigation system. This is easily fixed by stepping to the SE model, which also has an optional TV with DVD entertainment system. The top-end Corolla offers XM with NavTraffic, and the top Jetta models get satellite radio and a six-CD changer. Both models include or have available Bluetooth connectivity and auxiliary audio jacks.

Safety

Both sedans have available antilock brakes with brake assist, as well as a full set of airbags, but the Jetta has disc brakes all around while the Corolla comes with inferior drum brakes in the rear. The Corolla got Four-Star ratings in three of four government crash tests, while the Jetta triumphs with Five-Star ratings in two of four impact tests.

Other
The Jetta SportWagen features revised styling for 2010. Similarly priced Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Jetta sedans deliver similar levels of equipment and passenger room. From there, the Jetta takes off with far more available horsepower and torque, fuel economy and available technology. This combines with better safety ratings and brakes to make you feel like this is the right choice for your family, unless your budget forces you to go Corolla.
