Toyota Camry vs. Volkswagen GLI Review

Performance
When it comes to horsepower, the Toyota Camry packs quite a punch and will knock the Volkswagen GLI down a few rungs. On the other hand, note that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their similar turning radii, the GLI and the Toyota Camry definitely handle roughly the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The Camry has a more massive engine than the GLI. Note that smaller engines are often cheaper to fix, but smaller engines can be stressed more. The Toyota Camry could learn a lesson or two from the Volkswagen in terms of pickup. Torque is the force that lets you accelerate quickly, and in this respect, the Volkswagen GLI is substantially more powerful than the Toyota Camry.

Utility
Neither the Toyota nor the Volkswagen GLI has a marked advantage as far as seating capacity.

Convenience
You will definitely have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the GLI than with the Camry.

While the front cabin in the Toyota Camry offers a bit more head room than the Volkswagen GLI, there frankly isn't much of a difference. The ampler interior dimensions of the Toyota Camry make it significantly more spacious for your passengers than the Volkswagen GLI.

Your wallet will hurt more every time you fill up the Toyota Camry than the Volkswagen GLI because of its bigger tank. The Volkswagen and the Toyota Camry compete for the same parking spaces. The Volkswagen GLI's shorter wheelbase may produce a less-settled highway ride but a more agile feel in daily traffic than the Toyota Camry.

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs almost the same to get the Volkswagen to the dealership as the Camry. The Toyota Camry doesn't pale in comparison to the Volkswagen GLI regarding fuel economy. There honestly isn't much of a difference in gas mileage here, but if you must know, the Volkswagen GLI is a tad more economical than the Toyota Camry. In terms of MSRP, the Toyota Camry doesn't cost much less than the Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen GLI and the Camry have the same basic after-sale protection.
