2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid Overview

Redesigned just last year, Toyota has thrown a hybrid power-plant into its best-selling midsize sedan to create the fuel efficient 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid family cruiser.

The Toyota Camry is one of the best selling cars in the world – for good reason. Reliability, safety, fuel economy, and build quality are all strong traits of the decades-old Camry line and these traits carry over to the Camry Hybrid.  The 2013 Camry Hybrid looks very similar to the standard Camry, albeit with some aerodynamic trim pieces to make the Camry Hybrid cut through the air better. In addition, the Hybrid gets auto on/off projector-beam halogen headlamps, daytime running lights, power-adjustable wing mirrors, 16-inch steel wheels, and solar-absorbing glass as standard. Exterior options are limited on the Camry Hybrid and include a moon-roof, 17” alloy wheels, heated wing mirrors, and integrated fog lights.

The interior of the 2013 Camry Hybrid well equipped even in base guise, starting at the LE trim level. The standard, manually-adjustable seats come lined with cloth, but can be spec’d with power-adjustment and leather by request. In addition, the Camry Hybrid gets dual-zone automatic climate control, a 6.1-inch multi-function touch display, a six-speaker audio system w/ Ipod connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-function steering wheel, and a tilt/telescoping steering column as standard equipment. On more deluxe versions, the Camry Hybrid adds satellite navigation, a premium 10-speaker sound system, a backup camera, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, and Toyota’s Entune system, which connects the car to your smartphone to power in-system apps like Pandora internet radio, or data services including weather and traffic updates.

Both trims of the Camry Hybrid get the same power-plant, a 200-horsepower hybrid system that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a CVT and an electric motor. The Camry Hybrid’s fuel economy ratings are predictably high, with the LE trim returning 43/39 mpg city/highway, while the plush XLE trim returns slightly less, at 40/38 mpg city/highway. We attribute the difference to the added weight of electronics and accessories in the upscale version.

With ten airbags, traction/stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, whiplash-reducing seats, front and rear crumple zones, and side-impact door beams, the new 2013 Camry Hybrid offers plenty of standard safety features. To reduce worry about sudden accelerations, which Toyota has struggled with in the past, the Camry incorporates a system that cuts engine power when both the brake and accelerator are firmly depressed. The 2013 Camry Hybrid was awarded a full five-star overall crash test rating by the NHTSA.
