2008 Subaru Outback Overview
A perennial favorite of outdoor enthusiasts, tree huggers, and suburban families, the 2008 Subaru Outback drops the sedan body style and is now only available as a wagon. Available in four trim levels, it offers ample ground clearance to rival many compact SUVs. The base 170-horsepower 2.5 liter 4-cylinder offers decent acceleration. The turbocharged engine in the 2.5 XT spools up 243 horsepower, delivering brisk thrust at any speed. The 3.0 liter 6-cylinder in the 3.0R offers 245 horsepower and an adaptive 5-speed automatic transmission with SPORTSHIFT® manual shifting capability, also available on 2.5 XT models. A 5-speed manual transmission is also available on 2.5i and 2.5 XT models for crisp, well-defined shifts. New for 2008, optional SI-DRIVE allows you to maximize engine performance, control and efficiency by choosing "Intelligent", "Sport" and "Sport Sharp" modes. Operated by using a rotary dial mounted on the center console or a button on the steering wheel, it’s like having three engines in one. Standard continuous symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides enhanced traction and power to keep the car under control in a variety of road conditions. A variety of audio systems are available with an optional 6-disc in-dash CD changer with MP3/WMA capability and auxiliary audio jack for portable media players. An available touch-screen GPS navigation system provides detailed maps and directions to guide your way. Achieving a 5-star front and side impact crash test rating, it's a supremely safe family hauler. Optional Vehicle Dynamics Control can sense a loss of control, applying the brakes and reducing engine power to help keep you on your intended path. Standard 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force distribution create additional braking power and prevent wheel lockup. The optional Traction Control System helps to avoid a loss of traction during acceleration. The advanced frontal airbag system features dual front airbags, side-curtain airbags and seat-mounted side-impact airbags to protect front and rear passengers. With a wagon as flexible, powerful, and safe as the 2008 Subaru Outback, who really needs an SUV? |
