2014 Subaru Impreza Overview

New/Notable:
  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • Five-star overall safety rating and IIHS Top Safety Pick
  • Available as a sedan or hatchback
The 2014 Subaru Impreza rolls into the new model year with standard all-wheel drive and excellent safety ratings.

Last year, the Impreza added a bunch of standard features including standard Bluetooth connectivity, steering wheel audio controls, and a USB/iPod port. For 2014, Limited models add a rearview camera and the navigation system is now packaged with Aha smartphone integration. Subaru offers a quintet of Impreza models:  three sedans (base, Premium, and Limited) and two hatchbacks (Sport Premium and Sport Limited).

The Impreza features a sharp design and hexagonal grille; the front has enough character to avoid being dull but doesn’t try too hard to be angular. Power side view mirrors and 15-inch steel wheels are standard, with heated mirrors, 16- and 17-inch alloy rims available. A power moonroof and fog lights are also optional.

Under the hood, Subaru puts its 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter, flat-four engine with 145 pounds feet of torque and mates it to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) to feed power through the all-wheel drive system. The redesigned Impreza got a big fuel economy upgrade over its predecessor, helped by a diet plan that saw the latest generation shed weight and size. With the five-speed manual, the Impreza gets 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. The CVT improves those figures to 27/36 mpg city/highway.

Inside, Subaru has improved materials quality over the previous generation and features like a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, remote keyless entry, and split folding back seat come across all trims. Upper trim levels offer leather upholstery, automatic climate control, an upgraded instrument panel, heated seats, and navigation.

Subaru equips all Impreza models with the same safety features, including the company’s Vehicle Dynamic Control, stability and traction control, antilock brakes with emergency braking assist, electronic brake-force distribution and brake override. Manual transmission models include hill start assist. Seven airbags, including front, front side-impact, side curtains and a driver’s knee airbag help shield occupants. The Impreza earned a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

We are big fans of the 2013 Subaru Impreza, which offers plenty of standard features, good fuel economy, and a modern look into a tidy all-wheel-drive package.
