2010 Scion xD

How the 2010 Scion xD stacks up against the competition - by Nigel Cooper, Topanga, CA

Scion xD Review
2010 Scion xD
Price Range: $14,650 - $14,800

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. The Scion xD is significantly cheaper to get to the dealership than the average coupe/hatchback. Producing an exact gas mileage evaluation is so hard that some think not even the federal government can do it, but it looks as though the Scion xD is the winner with respect to fuel economy. The average coupe/hatchback consumes a lot of gas compared to the Scion xD. The typical coupe/hatchback is tremendously costlier than the xD in terms of MSRP.

Utility
Drivers with frequent child-duty might favor the Scion xD over the average coupe/hatchback.

Convenience
You will quite certainly have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the Scion xD than with the typical coupe/hatchback.

Comfort
While the front cabin in the average coupe/hatchback offers a bit more head room than the Scion xD, there really isn't much of a difference. While the rear of the Scion xD offers a bit more head- and leg-room than the average coupe/hatchback, there really isn't much of a difference.

Dimensions
The average coupe/hatchback is tremendously more bulky than the Scion xD. Your wallet will hurt more every time you fill up the average coupe/hatchback than the Scion xD because of its bigger tank. The Scion xD and the typical coupe/hatchback compete for the same parking spaces. The Scion xD's shorter wheelbase may produce a less-settled highway ride but a more maneuverable feel in daily traffic than the average coupe/hatchback.

Performance
When it comes to horsepower, the average coupe/hatchback packs quite a wallop and will knock the Scion xD down a few rungs. On the other hand, keep in mind that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their comparable turning circles, the average coupe/hatchback and the Scion xD quite certainly handle almost the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The Scion xD's engine is considerably smaller than the average coupe/hatchback's. Bear in mind that smaller engines can be stressed more; on the flip side, smaller engines typically get better gas mileage. Torque equals pickup, and the typical coupe/hatchback will have picked up and gone by the time the Scion xD finally gets moving. Torque is roughly equivalent to acceleration, and in this respect, the typical coupe/hatchback is tremendously more powerful than the Scion xD.

Warranty
The basic warranty that comes with the Scion xD isn't quite as generous as the typical coupe/hatchback's.
