2013 Scion xD Overview
Scion introduced the xD in 2007 to replace the slow-selling xA. Unlike its predecessor, the xD was designed for the North American market. Introduction coincided with the larger second-generation xB and the two share styling some cues.

The five-seat, four-door hatchback is the brand’s entry-level model, priced to be within reach of young buyers. Options are aimed at allowing personalization. For 2013, Scion offers a BeSpoke premium audio system option, which provides Bluetooth audio streaming, HD Radio, and support for the BeSpoke iPhone app.

Outside, the xD bears a resemblance to its larger xB sibling, notably on the front end, while possessing a more rakish side profile. Side mirrors with integrated turn signals, body-color door trim, chrome exhaust tip, 16-inch wheels, and rear window wiper are all standard. A new two-tone paint scheme and 18-inch Toyota Racing Development alloy wheels are optional.

Power for the xD comes from a 128-horsepower, 1.8-liter inline-four cylinder engine making 126 pounds-feet of torque and mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or an optional four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. Scion offers optional Toyota Racing Development performance muffler, shocks, springs and rear sway bar. With either transmission, the xD gets 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

Inside the xD, the driver is presented with a single gauge incorporating both the speedometer and tachometer. The 60/40 split-folding rear seat reclines and adjusts back and forth. There are several storage spots, including one under the cargo floor, a tray under the steering wheel and a double glove box. With the standard audio system, the USB port will charge an iPod and with select music players the track listing displays on the head unit. Steering wheel audio controls allow track selection and volume control. The BeSpoke premium audio system features a 5.8-inch screen. Support for the BeSpoke iPhone app brings Facebook, Twitter, and Yelp access.

The xD features a full complement of safety features. Standard equipment includes stability and traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and emergency braking assist, active front head restraints, front seat belt load limiters and pre-tensioners. Inside are eight airbags: front, front side-impact, and side-curtains. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Scion xD a Top Safety Pick.
