How the 2010 Scion tC stacks up against the competition - by Nigel Cooper, Topanga, CA

Scion tC Review
2010 Scion tC
Price: $17,000

Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. The Scion tC is considerably cheaper to get to the dealership than the average coupe/hatchback. In terms of gas mileage, the average coupe/hatchback is somewhat better than the Scion tC, but not by much. The tC doesn't pale in comparison to the typical coupe/hatchback as far as gas mileage. With respect to MSRP, the Scion tC costs tremendously less than the typical coupe/hatchback.

Utility
The Scion tC will definitely prove friendlier than the average coupe/hatchback for those of you with frequent kid-cargo.

Convenience
You won't have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the Scion tC than with the average coupe/hatchback, because both offer similar mileage ranges.

Comfort
Taller drivers will considerably enjoy the extra head room in the typical coupe/hatchback's front cabin compared to the Scion tC. While the rear of the tC provides a bit more head- and leg-room than the average coupe/hatchback, there honestly isn't much of a difference.

Dimensions
The average coupe/hatchback is tremendously heavier than the Scion tC. The Scion tC's tank is roughly the same size as the typical coupe/hatchback's, though the typical coupe/hatchback's is a little bigger. The typical coupe/hatchback and the Scion tC compete for the same parking spaces.

Performance
When it comes to horsepower, the typical coupe/hatchback packs quite a wallop and will knock the tC down a few rungs. On the other hand, keep in mind that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.

Handling
With their similar turning radii, the average coupe/hatchback and the tC definitely handle almost the same into and out of tight spots.

Drivetrain
The tC's engine is substantially smaller than the average coupe/hatchback's. Bear in mind that a smaller engine usually has to work a little harder; on the flip side, smaller engines typically get better gas mileage. The Scion tC could learn a lesson or two from the average coupe/hatchback as far as torque. The average coupe/hatchback packs quite a wallop compared to the Scion tC with respect to torque, which is roughly equivalent to acceleration.

Warranty
The basic warranty that comes with the Scion tC isn't quite as generous as the average coupe/hatchback's.
